" WHY?" by Kevin Crilly is a fascinating and totally absorbing book which takes the reader on a journey through the tough and often hard to stomach world of bouncers and protection rackets. One should really dislike Dave for his violence, bigotry and racism but actually one ends up quite liking him. The central character is made all the more plausible by the skill of the writer who takes us through the highs and lows of Dave’s life, vividly portraying all of the emotions that drive him on, all of which keeps the reader enthralled until the last page and shocking conclusion.  Kevin Crilly should be proud of this first novel and I hope there are many more to come."

This is a great little book. Easy to read and a page turner without doubt. I am fortunate enough to have a signed copy from the author, Kevin Crilly. He paints a very accurate picture of Dave's violent world and the characters that inhabit it - some of whom seem very familiar! I read a lot and usually expect to see the odd plot twist coming. Without giving too much away I saw one twist coming but it was followed up by a couple more which I didn't see at all! Very neat. A very moving book at the end giving the reader food for thought. I would make this essential reading for all teenagers to read and discuss at school as it deals with such important issues re our prejudices. I could also see it being a good movie in the hands of Mike Leigh.”
